  • FAQs

What's the difference between a Type I and Type II Barricades?

    • Type I Barricades have retroreflective striped sheeting on both sides of the barricade, top panel only.
    • Type II Barricades have retroreflective striped sheeting on both sides of the barricade, top and bottom panels.
type I vs Type II Barricades

How do I know which type to use?
In general, if you need higher visibility, especially at night or on roadways with faster traffic, choose Type II.
For lighter-duty pedestrian or daytime applications, Type I is usually enough.

What type of retroreflective stiped sheeting should I use on the barricade?
There are three grades of striped sheeting to choose from. Engineering Grade (EG), High Intensity Prismatic Grade (HIP) and Diamond Grade (DG).

    • EG Grade: basic level of reflectivity, good for low speed areas such as parking lots and private property.
    • HIP Grade: much brighter and higher reflectivity than EG grade, good for work zone devices requiring high visibility.
    • DG Grade: the brightest, highest performance sheeting, good for work zones requiring superior visibility from long distances and wide viewing angles.

Check with your DOT or local agency who specifies the device to assure you are meeting the specific reflective sheeting requirements.

How do federal and state rules determine the appropriate barricade type and sheeting?
The MUTCD (federal standard) defines barricade types (Type I / II / III) and gives standards and guidance for when to use each.

Many states adopt the MUTCD or have State Supplements, their own versions or additions to the MUTCD. That means local DOTs can require certain barricade types in certain scenarios.

Use our Traffic State Reference Guide to determine which products, barricade types, and sheeting options are approved for use in your state.
